Miracle cure for weight loss? What apple cider vinegar can really do

Apple cider vinegar is considered a real miracle cure. It should make you slim, supply the body with vitamins, prevent diseases and stimulate digestion. But what is it about the supposed all-rounder? Does it actually keep what the advertising promises?

Apple cider vinegar is no longer just used for salad dressing. It is used in liquid or capsule form. Some drink it diluted with water and honey every morning as part of an apple cider vinegar regimen. But how does apple cider vinegar actually affect health?

Drinking apple cider vinegar - alleged effect

Vinegar made from apple cider, better known as apple cider vinegar, is an old home remedy that is used to treat or prevent a wide variety of ailments. For example, daily drinking apple cider vinegar can strengthen the immune system and help against headaches and asthma, it is said. In addition, apple cider vinegar is said to lower blood sugar levels and therefore support the treatment of diabetes.

Because of its antibacterial effect, the home remedy can also help with a bladder infection. Apple cider vinegar is also said to help against high blood pressure and lower blood lipids.

However, there is no scientific evidence for any of these applications, according to consumer advocates. We have therefore got to the bottom of some of the myths about apple cider vinegar.

Drink apple cider vinegar and lose weight

An apple cider vinegar diet is said to stimulate digestion and metabolism, making it easier to lose weight. The reason: Acetic acid can support digestion to a certain extent, as it stimulates the flow of saliva and the production of gastric acid, counteracts possible flatulence and can thus reduce feelings of fullness.

From the point of view of experts, it is still a myth that apple cider vinegar helps you lose weight and stimulates fat burning. There is no scientific evidence of a fat-melting effect.

Apple cider vinegar in a weight loss diet

Apple cider vinegar does not shed the pounds and is therefore useless as a helper in a diet. The experts at the German Nutrition Society (DGE) also see it that way. The consumer advice centers also emphasize that there is no evidence of a slimming effect - triggered or intensified by apple cider vinegar.

In general, caution should be exercised with apple cider vinegar and other types of vinegar. They should only be consumed in small amounts. Because too much acid irritates the stomach and also attacks the tooth enamel. Additional acid is also not recommended for heartburn, as it can worsen the symptoms.

Apple cider vinegar for better skin

Apple cider vinegar is also used externally, for example as a cleansing and nourishing facial tonic. The acid is supposed to contribute to better blood circulation. Impure skin, pimples and acne could be reduced in this way. However, there are no studies to prove this either.

Apple cider vinegar for more beautiful hair

The "panacea" apple cider vinegar is also attributed to the fact that it helps to beautiful hair. Although there are no studies to prove this either, give it a try. It doesn't do any harm.

If you want to condition your hair with apple cider vinegar, it's best to use it as a conditioner. To do this, mix the apple cider vinegar with water in a ratio of 3: 1, for example a teaspoon of vinegar with a cup of water. Either you massage the essence gently into your hair and scalp or you fill the liquid into a spray bottle.

After washing your hair, spray your hair with the vinegar-water mixture, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water at the end. After the treatment, the hair should look better and easier to comb.

Apple cider vinegar for warts

The home remedy apple cider vinegar is also said to help against warts on the skin. Some grandmothers swear by dipping a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, placing it on the wart, and putting a band-aid over it. But here, too, there is a lack of scientific evidence to prove this.

Drink apple cider vinegar before bed

Apple cider vinegar is also said to help you fall asleep when combined with honey and a little water. This mixture should be drunk shortly before going to bed. However, such an effect has also not been scientifically proven.

Gargle with apple cider vinegar for a sore throat

A strengthening effect on the immune system has not yet been proven either. However, if a sore throat starts, a little apple cider vinegar can be helpful. Diluted with water and gargled, it can curb the growth of bacteria a little, because the acid has an antibacterial effect.

Nutrients in apple cider vinegar are low

In addition to the possible applications, the question arises of how nutritious apple cider vinegar actually is. Many ingredients that are contained in fresh apples can also be found in apple cider vinegar, including vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances. However, the amount of active ingredient that you absorb from a few teaspoons of vinegar is very small. The vinegar cannot compete with a fresh apple.

Apple cider vinegar does not contain vitamin C.

Because after the various production steps of vinegar, the original active ingredients of the apple are also only available in small quantities. For example, a fresh 100-gram apple provides about twelve milligrams of vitamin C, six milligrams of calcium, 45 micrograms of beta-carotene and 107 milligrams of potassium.

100 milliliters of vinegar, on the other hand, no longer contains any vitamin C at all, six milligrams of calcium, nine micrograms of beta-carotene and 100 milligrams of potassium. If the vinegar is also filtered or distilled, other ingredients are lost. It is therefore best to use naturally cloudy apple cider vinegar in organic quality.
