Nitrogen is a colorless and odorless gas. The gas is chemically inert, non-flammable and displaces oxygen. Nitrogen is present in the air at 78.1% by volume. Nitrogen is used in liquid, cooled form as a refrigerant in the food industry and for transport with isothermal vehicles. Since nitrogen is an inert, odorless and tasteless gas, it is mostly used as an atmosphere for food packaging.

Nitrogen is used in the metal industry and in mechanical engineering for the thermal treatment of various types of metal and as a pressure medium in tanks or pipes. Nitrogen is also often used in chemical processes, for example in the synthesis of ammonia.
