The Armenian language is an Indo-European language that has long been thought to be an Iranian dialect, as it has borrowed many loan words from the Iranian-speaking area (Parthian, Middle Persian, Persian). Today the Armenian language is divided into two language groups, Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian. Eastern Armenian is the official language in Armenia and is also spoken in Iran, Georgia and Russia. Western Armenian is mainly spoken by Armenian exiles in the USA and Lebanon.

Armenian has many harsh-sounding combinations of consonants. Both Old Armenian and New Armenian have a complicated declension system with seven cases. There is also no grammatical gender of nouns. Before World War II, around 50 dialects were spoken in Armenia. The old complex verb forms of these various dialects have been replaced by new forms that require the use of auxiliary verbs. The subjunctive of Old Armenian no longer exists today. From a grammatical point of view, Old Armenian had a lot in common with Greek, whereas New Armenian, after centuries of geographical proximity to the Ottoman Empire, took over some grammatical peculiarities of Turkish (e.g. post positions instead of prepositions).
