How do I create a superhero universe

Avengers & X-Men: This is how the huge superhero meeting can happen

Fans had to wait a long time, soon it could actually become reality: A meeting of the Avengers and X-Men in the MCU. But what ways would there be for a crossover?

Update: It's the next step in the upcoming Merger of the X-Men Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe: MCU boss Kevin Feige will decide in the future about the movements of upcoming X-Men films and their characters. Last autumn we examined how the two film universes could be plausibly linked. The article originally published follows.

It is now official: 20th Century Fox becomes part of Disney, and as such, diverse Marvel Comics heroes are finally united under one roof. After Marvel was on the brink of bankruptcy over 20 years ago and had to sell the film rights to its most lucrative licenses, Deadpool, Wolverine, Spider-Man and Captain America could soon go side by side on an adventure. In the following lines, we want to show you how these heroes, who previously acted separately from each other, could meet. Incidentally, we are primarily concentrating on the comics, although the aftermath of Avengers 4 should certainly also open up space to bring mutants into the MCU.

Option 1 for the Avengers / X-Men meeting: House of M

Wanda Maximoff or Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful members of the Avengers. If her powers get out of hand, Wanda can wreak havoc with it, or even all of it Change reality. The latter happened as part of the comic event House of M. In this story, Wanda turns things around on earth, because suddenly the mutants are the dominant species on the blue planet and no longer humans.

In the MCU, more precisely in Captain America: Civil War, we have already witnessed that Wanda does not always have her powers under 100% control. A storyline in which Wanda is possibly manipulated and therefore changes reality with her powers would be quite conceivable for the MCU. Wanda could change the world so that there are more "wonders" like her and her brother Quicksilver, creating mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for the X-Men.

Option 2 for the Avengers / X-Men meeting: Marvel Multiverse

When you think of the term multiverse when you think of comics, the first thing that probably comes to mind is images of the Marvel competitor DC. But Marvel itself also has one huge comic multiverse, which also includes worlds that are outside the comics. The current Spider-Man video game, for example, is just as much a part of the Marvel Multiverse as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In order for the X-Men and Avengers to come together, they don't necessarily have to share a universe - they can also exist in different universes. The new X-Men timeline that began with X-Men: First Decision could be continued in this way without any problems and without major changes in the cast. There are enough ways in which the X-Men and Avengers could still meet in such a case, for example through the Quantum Realm.

Option 3 for the Avengers / X-Men meeting: Mutants already exist in the MCU

Okay, here we are actually on thin ice, but I find this opportunity particularly exciting. What if there are already mutants in the MCU but the world has forgotten its existence? Or more precisely, someone made the world forget that mutants even exist: Professor X. It would be possible to integrate the previous adventures of the X-Men into the MCU. Thus, the X-Men could have protected the earth against all sorts of dangers before the Avengers.

A particularly devastating event, maybe one runaway Jean Gray, but could ultimately have caused Professor X and Cerebro to erase all memories of mutants. It would not be the first time that Charles Xavier manipulated or even erased memories. However, the events of the fight against Thanos in Avengers 4 could force the X-Men to reveal themselves to the world again.

Option 4 for the Avengers / X-Men meeting: Secret Wars

The events of the comic book event are closely linked to the Marvel multiverse Secret Wars, which had a huge impact on the publisher's comic book worlds. A screen adaptation of the story would be ideal for bringing the Avengers and X-Men together.

In the Secret Wars of 2015, the heroes and villains known to us had to fight for the survival of their universe. Quite a few fights are on the so-called Battleworld carried out, a place which Dr. Doom was created. Should Marvel let the X-Men and Avengers at home in different universes for the time being, Battleworld would be an above all spectacular solution to let the characters of both franchises compete against each other and then to unite on one earth.

Option 5 for the Avengers / X-Men meeting: Complete restart based on the Ultimate Comics

Seven years ago, Marvel Comics rejuvenated its Ultimate series and brought new momentum to the stories of these comic series. The X-Men were also affected by some changes, as it was revealed to them that they were by no means a freak of nature or the next stage in human evolution, but nothing more than failed experiments.

With Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver, the MCU already went its own way to explain their powers; of course also because Marvel was not allowed to use the term mutant in its films. Since the MCU is generally very clear oriented towards the ultimate comics, it wouldn't be so absurd to take such a path and possibly introduce the X-Men as failed experiments of the military. These may even go back a long way, so that Wolverine pursued a mission of its own parallel to Captain America in World War II.

Which of these options is your favorite? Do you have any other ideas how the Avengers and X-Men could meet in the MCU?
